Basics

What is 10k Science?

10k Science is Dynamoid’s immersive 3D science learning platform for web and VR. It helps learners explore real scientific data through interactive environments, AI-guided instruction, formative assessment, and educator-facing insights.

10k Science is designed for science topics that are hard to teach with text, diagrams, slides, or video alone: microscopic structures, molecular processes, body systems, environmental systems, and mechanisms that require students to connect ideas across scales.

Who makes 10k Science?

10k Science is made by Dynamoid, an Oakland-based educational software company with a mission to democratize science education through AI and VR technology.

Dynamoid is the company. 10k Science is the flagship product and platform.

Is 10k Science a product, a platform, or an app?

10k Science is a product and platform. It includes immersive science experiences, the 10k Science Viewer for web and VR, AI Guides, formative assessment tools, the Educator Dashboard, and a growing content library.

People may also describe it as a science VR app, a web-based interactive 3D science platform, or an immersive science learning platform.

What makes 10k Science different from a video or ordinary 3D model viewer?

10k Science is designed for active exploration and explanation. Students can move through immersive 3D environments, inspect objects, cross levels of scale, hear guidance, answer prompts verbally, and receive feedback.

The goal is not only to show students a model. It is to help them build a mental model of how a scientific system works.

Access And Devices

Is 10k Science available on Meta Quest?

Can people try 10k Science in a browser?

Yes. The 10k Science Web Viewer lets people explore an immersive interactive science experience in a browser.

Can educators sign up for a free trial account?

Yes. Educators can start a free trial account for the 10k Science web platform, including the web viewer and Educator Dashboard.

Is 10k Science only for VR headsets?

No. 10k Science supports both VR and web-based immersive science learning. This matters for classrooms because schools may not have a headset for every student.

Teachers can use 10k Science through individual browser exploration, small-group work, VR station rotations, whole-class previews, or post-experience debriefs.

Does every student need a headset?

No. 10k Science can be used on the web as well as in VR. In classrooms with limited headset access, teachers can use station rotations or combine VR exploration with web-based participation, discussion, readings, diagrams, or formative assessment activities.

Where can users find current pricing and availability?

Current pricing, trials, subscriptions, free experiences, and organizational licensing are available on the live 10k Science pricing page. Access status can change, so pricing and availability should be checked there rather than copied from this knowledge base.

Educators can also start a free trial account for the web platform.

Classroom Use

Who is 10k Science for?

10k Science is primarily for science classrooms, schools, districts, higher education, researchers, and science communicators. It is especially useful when learners need a spatial way to understand science that is invisible, abstract, dynamic, or difficult to observe directly.

How can teachers use 10k Science?

Teachers can use 10k Science for individual exploration, small-group investigation, VR station rotations, whole-class previews, post-experience debriefs, pre-lab or post-lab reasoning, and formative assessment.

The Educators page explains classroom use in more detail.

What classroom problems is 10k Science designed to help with?

10k Science is designed to help with abstract concepts, microscopic and molecular science, student engagement, explanation-based learning, formative assessment, and giving teachers better visibility into student understanding.

Dynamoid’s 2023 educator survey identified recurring challenges such as limited teacher time, student engagement and distraction, funding constraints, individualized feedback, intrinsic motivation, and teaching concepts that are difficult to see directly.

Is 10k Science a replacement for teachers?

No. 10k Science is designed to support teachers. AI Guides can prompt and respond to students during an experience, while the Educator Dashboard helps teachers see student progress and understanding.

The teacher remains responsible for instruction, classroom context, discussion, feedback, and curriculum decisions.

Is 10k Science useful for biology?

Yes. 10k Science is especially relevant to biology and life-science learning because it helps students explore cells, molecules, DNA, RNA, proteins, CRISPR, blood, plant systems, pain signaling, respiratory health, antibodies, echolocation, evolution, and other topics that are difficult to observe directly.

See VR Biology App For Meta Quest And Web and 3D Molecular Biology Learning for more detail.

Is 10k Science only for biology?

No. Biology is a major strength, but 10k Science also includes chemistry, environmental science, health science, engineering-related topics, food chemistry, air quality, atomic orbitals, and scientific visualization.

Does 10k Science use real scientific data?

Yes. 10k Science experiences are built around real scientific data, research-based visualizations, and collaborations with scientists and educators. 10k Science materials describe content created using authentic data from researchers at institutions including UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and the University of Washington.

AI Guides And Formative Assessment

What are AI Guides?

AI Guides are instructional agents inside 10k Science experiences. They can audibly orient students, call attention to relevant structures, prompt observation and explanation, listen to spoken responses, and provide personalized real-time feedback.

How does formative assessment work in 10k Science?

Students respond verbally to prompts while exploring immersive science environments. AI helps score understanding of key concepts based on those responses, and teachers can review student progress and thinking through the Educator Dashboard.

The formative assessment loop is: explore, prompt, explain, assess, respond, and continue.

Is 10k Science a high-stakes testing system?

No. 10k Science is positioned as a formative assessment tool, not a high-stakes testing system. It is designed to help students receive guidance during learning and help teachers see where students understand concepts or need support.

What does the Educator Dashboard show?

The Educator Dashboard gives teachers visibility into student progress and understanding. 10k Science materials describe the dashboard as displaying and summarizing students’ verbal responses to prompts throughout the experience in real time and helping educators identify where individual students may be having challenges.

See Viewer, Guides, Dashboard, And Formative Assessment for more detail.

NGSS And Learning Design

Is 10k Science NGSS-aligned?

10k Science content is developed to align with the Next Generation Science Standards in partnership with the Lawrence Hall of Science.

How does 10k Science support NGSS learning?

10k Science supports NGSS-aligned learning by giving students scientific phenomena and models to explore, then prompting them to observe, compare, explain, and connect ideas. This fits well with NGSS science and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts.

Which NGSS crosscutting concepts fit 10k Science?

10k Science is especially well suited to crosscutting concepts such as patterns, cause and effect, scale, systems and system models, energy and matter, structure and function, and stability and change.

The platform helps students move across scale, trace mechanisms, compare states, and connect structures to what they do.

Evidence

What evidence supports 10k Science?

10k Science has shown strong engagement signals and evidence of promise for science learning in pilot and survey materials. Reported signals include a 137-student pilot, 22 of 28 students preferring VR over reading or video, +15% content knowledge gains in Dynamoid pilot studies, 78% student engagement, and an independent Stevens Institute pilot where over 92% of undergraduates said the experience enhanced their learning.

See Research And Evaluation for more detail.

What did educators report about classroom challenges?

Dynamoid’s 2023 educator survey gathered feedback from more than 60 science educators. The report identified challenges including limited teacher time, student engagement and distraction, funding constraints, providing individual feedback, intrinsic motivation, and teaching abstract or non-visible concepts.

The report also found that 74% of surveyed educators identified budget constraints as a major barrier to VR classroom adoption.
